　　一. 释义

　　按照惯例，我们先翻翻词典，了解一下它们的基本意思。

　　剑桥在线词典

　　剑桥在线词典写着，in the event of 意为 if something should happen，翻译成中文就是“如果发生”的意思。in the event that 剑桥词典没有记录，但它们两者的意思是一样的，只是前者之后加名词，后者之后加句子。

　　我们翻一翻其他词典：

　　根据牛津在线词典的释义，in the event of / that 的中文意思亦即“如果发生”，如：

　　This will reduce the chance of serious injury in the event of an accident.

　　（参考译文：如果发生意外，这将减小严重受伤的可能。）

　　二. 用法

　　如果放在法律文书中，in the event of / that 应该如何理解更为贴切呢？

　　以下笔记根据李克兴《法律翻译 译.注.评》中的相关知识点总结而得：

　　（1）in the event of / that 最适宜用来引导作为条件出现的大事件、罕见事件、不幸事件和假设性事件。但 in case 则不足以表达“大事件”。

　　如：In the event thatthe member deceases before the age of 65, all his accrued benefits from MPF shall be paid to his legal heir.

　　（2）在法律文件中，in the event of / that 译为“万一”、“一旦”较为妥帖，尽管“如果”、“若”等译法随处可见。

　　如，上例可以翻译为：

　　万一强积金计划成员在六十五岁之前身故，其权益发放给法定遗产继承人。

　　（3）in the event that 中的 that 在较规范的法律文本中不可省略。这与 in case 相反。in case 之后如果要引出一个从句，必须直接跟在 in case 之后，不可添加代词 that。
